Flora Stevenson Nursery, Edinburgh

  • Project: New Nursery School Building
  • Year of completion: 2002
  • Client: City of Edinburgh Council
  • Project Value: £500k
  • Architect: Arcade Architects

This single storey structure, completed in 2002, in the grounds of the primary school of the same name, replaced some elderly 'temporary' huts with purpose built accommodation of two nursery classrooms and ancillary accommodation. Arcade Architects' design has a main classroom roof of two linked mono-pitched triangles on a triangular steel grid, infilled with birch ply on the inside. This provides a clean appearance inside and out, but also a degree of interest and complexity. Glazing tapering down from the apexes provides part of the light to the classrooms. A part glazed, part timber clad screen with overhanging cantilever roof runs along the long sides of the two triangles and provides a sheltered South West facing area adjoining the grassed play area. Ancillary accommodation is of traditional blockwork and timber construction, with exposed beams and roof joists in part.
