Graduates

Are you a recent or soon-to-be engineering graduate? Then we'd love to hear from you! For over 36 years we've taken on graduate engineers and given them a fantastic start to their careers. With a broad range of projects, from smaller domestic projects to large commercial and civil infrastructure schemes, there's great opportunities to gain experience across every aspect of engineering. Many of our senior team started out as graduates here, including our Managing Director!

Graduate Engineering - Role and Responsibilities

Since the formation of David Narro Associates, we have aimed to be innovative and practical in design. We are committed to maintaining a diverse knowledge base within our organisation and sustainable in our design. We have several CARE accredited engineers and are well respected for our work on historic structures such as castles and monuments. We have specialists that work on exciting new projects involving large structures such as distilleries and galleries and we now have a number of engineers who have earned accreditation in Passivhaus design. Our commitment to innovation and sustainability keeps clients coming back and attracts engineers to work with us.

Our graduates work on a wide range of projects and are given the opportunity to work with multiple teams to get a taste for the kind of work they enjoy. They often start with small domestic projects to help gain an understanding of how we operate. In their first projects, they will be guided through handling project finances and liaising with different members of the design team, internally and externally. We aim to give them lots of time on site in their first few months and help them get to grips with the design basics. By the end of their first year, they might find themselves designing castle repairs, large distilleries or even working on the Scottish National Galleries!

Project Range Strip 2

David Narro Associates has a large graduate training scheme, and our supervising engineers have decades of experience in helping our graduate engineers gain sufficient knowledge and ability to become fully chartered and responsible engineers. Many of our senior engineers have joined directly from university and now run our teams and sign off on exciting projects worth millions of pounds! The more our graduates learn, the more we learn, so if there is anything you want to learn about, we will encourage you to do so!

Your responsibilities as a graduate will include:

  • Designing and analysing structures – our graduates typically start performing calculations and modelling for senior engineers. This presents the opportunity for our them to learn. Once they have sufficient knowledge, they are given the opportunity to come up with scheme designs that are efficient and practical.
  • Communicating and working with others – our engineers must communicate clearly with technicians to produce clear and high-quality drawings to be submitted to our clients, architects and contractors. Liaising and collaborating with architects and contractors is critical in bringing our clients’ visions to life.
  • Workload management and taking responsibility – our graduates are instantly given control of project finances and deadlines, under guidance of our senior and project engineers. Most of our engineers also carry some extra responsibilities, such as helping build our knowledge on sustainable design or helping organise our study trip and social events!
  • Learning and innovating – it is important that our engineers are learning how to design different structural elements, maintain structural stability and gaining an appreciation of architectural and construction constraints.
  • Getting involved! – More important than anything else, we expect our engineers to ask questions and speak to others to keep our workplace open and friendly.

Applicant requirements

We expect our graduates to hold, or expect to achieve, a degree related to Civil or Structural engineering at 2:1 level or above. We want all our engineers to feel confident and become fully responsible for their designs, so we expect our graduates to have a passion for engineering and work towards an ICE or IStructE qualification.

Our graduates typically start in September following interviews and offer acceptance, but we are happy for our graduates to start sooner!

Why us?

Our graduate salaries are competitive and the responsibility and opportunity for growth is significant.

We are an employee-owned company and therefore when the company profits, our employees profit too. All our employees receive annual dividends and there is a share buying scheme available for those wanting to invest more.

We have annual Christmas parties and a study trip, where you can learn a little more about the culture and architecture of a European city, but more importantly, get to know others in the company and have great time away!
